There are so many schizophrenics under bridges and in prisons because conventional medicine treats this mental illness as a consequence of excess dopamine in the brain. Since there is no such excess, this treatment does not work.

Question :

Diagnosis: Mental Illness. Situation: Managing the Mentally Ill in the Workplace?

Here s what s happening:

I am in frontline management at a well-known corporation. I have two employees who are "mentally ill" by diagnosis. I shouldn t know this, but they share every detail of what s going on with them medically very openly, seemingly for consideration.

My job is to manage the work, manage the production and ensure that goals are being met. This is the ONLY guidance or support that our Human Resources department gives management. Manage the WORK and if they are unable to achieve the goals of the job, then address it, coach, mentor, attempt to develop and if they are unable to meet the requirements of the job - -progress them out.

What Human Resources does NOT do is give management an ample amount of support to frontline management who have to manage extremely difficult behaviors that are associated with bipolar disorder, anger management, schizophrenia and any other number of mental illness diagnosis.

For my two employees, they are extremely skilled in the "art of passive-aggression" exhibiting alot of behaviors and acts that I "know" but can t "prove". Performance reviews are brutal. I dread them. No accountability at all but are very good at finding fault elsewhere, always an "external" person or situation that caused them to do poorly in their job. Constructive criticism is always accusations that "you re targeting me" or some other strong accusation. There are huge issues of comprehension and information retention. There is always a conspiracy theory going on inside their heads, the paranoia some of them have is so frustrating. I spend way too much time trying to de-bunk the theories that they dream up and while I know it s a tactic to take me from my mission of managing their work, it s really frustrating.

Managing the mentally ill seems to be a touchy subject. Employers seem to walk on eggshells when it is known that you have a mentally ill employee, possibly for fear of lawsuits. Yet, in this economy many companies are looking to cut their "dead weight employees". Unfortunately, my two employees are long time employees because those who have managed them previously just did the "hands off" approach out of fear I guess.

Now they re mine.....please tell me what to do with them. How do you manage the types of behaviors that I have spoken about? I really just don t know what to do and I don t feel supported by my company either to manage employees the way they want yet stay off of the toes of these employees. Out of 19 direct reports, these two take up probably 75% of my time.

What can I do?
Answer :
I doubt the paranoia is intended to keep you from you managing them - it is probably a legitimate symptom of their disorders, whatever they may be. There s no blanket way to manage mental illnesses - they vary so much, from anxiety disorders to depression to mania etc. I suspect you ve googled around & not found much - maybe you should try googling from the disabled person s viewpoint - see what kinds of accomodations are suggested for various mental illnesses under ADA guidelines, and think hard if any of those accomodations might help. STRESS really exacerbates mental illness symptoms, this is well proven, so anything you can do to reduce stress in their jobs would probably make their symptoms less, and therefore they would perform better on the job. I m not kidding - I have bipolar disorder, and have been totally disabled by it, but used to be a PhD student in geophysics working with NASA, and later had a corporate job for a few months, and stress was the big killer that made me much worse. Use a lot more positive reinforcement, which is more effective for all employees incidentally, and you will have less stress among all your employees. Bazelon.org might have some info on accomodations on the job, and bipolarworld.net - from the employee s perspective, but that may be helpful. all the best.
Question :

Where to get a genetic disorder test done???

I feel it would be foolish to contact Kings Daughter Medical Center or any hospital because I feel they would not have the means nor the ideas of where to get tested.
I am diagnosed with AD-HD
I have been adopted and share Little connection with my real family mainly my whole real family has disorders everywhere you go back! I try to stay distant from my real family!
I want to know where I could get a genetic test that would show I was positive for any disorders I may have! I know they have genetics testing but I only see that it is used for diseases and no really disorders....which in my opinion is inhumane...Genetic disorders are more prevalent and are broader than most diseases are!
The reason I want to get tested for genetic disorders is I want to know what can be expected if I have children! I want to know what the possibilities are that they inherit what I considered my childhood as a life-long curse to bear! I m going to college as of now and thought since I found nothing online about getting tested I know schizophrenia, bipolar, mood disorders, multiple personality disorders, and the list goes on and on in my family. I take medication and am extremely bright...which I consider myself blessed for but my question is:. Are there genetic tests I can have done to determine what disorders I have that may affect my future thoughts of having children....????????????????? If there are none I will have no children.
The Irony is I m 18yrs and the very last one in my family to carry on the last name and may not if I cannot get tested! The reason I will not have children is because I will not bring someone into this world bearing what I ve always considered to be a life-long curse. At 18yrs old medical cards cancel for "MOST" children with disorders and cannot pay for their medication resulting in numerous behavioral problems emerging (If they really have problems) They have to go for SSI in which they most always get turned down without a lawyer which is inhumane in my opinion. I have still have the letter turning me down stating, We have reviewed your case, and do not see any cause for it to be disabling in any way) So disorders really take a toll on people in life. I wanted to join the marines 2 yrs ago after high school. I was the best and got the most awards, the most decorated and best in physical shape and couldn t join the service taking medication... It s wrong with all their insecurities of taking medication.
I waited 2 yrs before I could get SSI just to be told I couldn t work and make over 1,300 a month and keep my medical card SSI (Medicaid)...it takes the values of young ambitious peoples lives away.... they can only have 674.00 a month!!! Think of that paying for the least an apartment, they wouldn t have any money to eat maybe bologna and bread, have a car, insurance... So having disorders really changes children s life, and they like to make a bigger deal out of cancer when its not! I do not want to have a child that s illegitimate to society because of prejudice insecurities! Not being about to enter the armed forces if they really wanted to join and having had the qualities and abilities, become a policeman without being turned down by peoples prejudice of a doctors note for the drugs for reasons of peoples insecurities. My question is are there genetic tests I can get that will tell me if I have future children, what their risks of inheriting disorders are??????????????????
Answer :
There are no genetic tests that can show the presence of absence of mental health disorders becaus ethey have not identified exactly which genes it falls on so they do not even know what to look for.... There are a number of different genes that are or can be responsible for developing these disorders but they don t know if you can develop them with only one gene or if you need say 4 different ones.... Genetic testing for certain diseases (like Tay Sachs) is possible only because they know exactly what to look for.... they just are not far enough along to be able to predict mental disorders.... in addition a person could have all the right genes but never develop the disorder because there may be other factors that cause the disorder to develop... like the genes AND trauma.. they just do not know yet.....

Answer :
I m so sorry for your troubles. I am guessing that by disorder, you mean psychiatric disorder, right? Assuming that this is what you mean, I can answer your question, but I m sorry that you won t like the answer.

In genetics, we know that there are not single genes which are responsible for psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. They are caused by multiple genes as well as by environmental factors, and we do not yet know what all of those genes and factors are. Many studies are in progress in these areas. We do know that these disorders are heritable, with risks of approximately between 1 - 20% depending upon your family history.

No genetic testing is available today, including for prenatal diagnosis.

You can also discuss this with your doctor and ask for a referral to a genetic counselor. The GC can consider your family history and discuss this in more detail with you to help you make future decisions.

Best wishes.
