Attention Deficit Disorder can be defined in three ways - inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and a combination of both. New and better treatments for Attention Deficit Disorder are being developed every day. But prior to treatment is the obvious step of diagnosis - which can be the most difficult stage. Learning to understand Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms is the first line of defense in tackling this difficult condition.

Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms manifest themselves differently in every person. One sufferer may demonstrate the inability to concentrate on simple tasks, listen to straightforward directions, or focus long enough to complete a project; these are considered symptoms of classic Attention Deficit Disorder.

Others present with excessive hyperactivity - the inability to sit still, wait their turn, organize their thoughts, or control impulsive behavior; these are considered signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. In some cases, sufferers may actually demonstrate a combination of behaviors.

When making an Attention Deficit Disorder diagnosis, medical professionals will look for at least eight out of a possible fourteen Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms to be present. The medical community's accepted guidelines on Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms acts as a checklist for determining prevailing behaviors.

When a significant number of Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms are present, a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder is made. Only then can you begin appropriate treatment - including therapy and effective medication.

Commonly question about Understanding Attention Deficit Disorder Symptoms

Question :

Attention Deficit Disorder? or Learning Disability?

Hey I have a big problem that i ve had for years, I have always struggled in math in school and some other classes throughout my school career(in college now).
I have taken bunches of classes and the one s that are (1) Interesting to me and (2) are simple in nature(as in straight-forward) are the ones I do well in.
I run into a problem with math, I cannot stay focused on it regardless of how hard I try, and it seems to me that the more i study for an exam the worse I do. I have exhausted alot of other options and most teachers tack my poor performance toward lack of effort, which is completely un-true. I study my tail off and come in to a test completely confident that I will do well and even finish the test s with a sense that I had done very well. I come in to find out that I have done incredibly poorly on the test and I miss allllllllll of the questions involving detail(although i feel completely before and after having finished the question that I got it right). My teacher described that I always get all of the "meat and potatoes" to every problem but miss the minor details that go along with it, resulting in a lower score. I also falter often when it comes to Multiple Choice questions on these math tests. I have had the same issue with my psychology classes in college, I understand the topic very well, but miss the details that supplement whatever the topic be. I would often miss problems that would have complex responses, such as defining a term and(if referring to psychology) the symptoms along with that and the treatment to go along with that. These questions are almost certain for me to get wrong, although I clearly know the information.
This has been a big problem for me in school and clearly follows a predictable path, all the way since 5th grade to now(Jr yr of college) I have suffered in math and various classes for inexplicable reasons..
Please Help...
Answer :
Have you tried listening to music while you study and take tests? What about eating? It helps me to listen to music and every time I start to daydream or doze off I eat a sour candy (I HATE SOURS) and it seems to be a bit more successful than rewarding myself for every question I get right. Sorry I can t help more, in all honesty I haven t entirely figured it our myself hahaha

Personal Experience
Question :

Is it possible that I may have Attention Deficit Disorder?

I am a teenage girl, and so far I have made some research over the internet about girls with ADD and ADHD. For a VERY long time I ve felt that there was something different about me, and from what i have read I come very close to possibly having the inattentive type.

here are some symptoms that I have experienced for a long time:

It s very hard for me to keep track of homework assignments and due dates.

No matter how hard I try to be on time, I am usually late.

I have trouble getting to sleep at night.

jump from one topic to another in conversation.

I interrupt other people when they re talking, even though I try not to.

Even when I try to listen in class my thoughts start wandering.

I have difficulty remembering what I ve read.

I can t seem to get started on school assignments until the last minute.

My room is very messy

My friends call me "spacey."

I forget to do things my parents ask me to do.

I frequently lose or misplace personal items.

My parents and teachers tell me I need to try harder in school.

I am distracted easily by sounds or by things I see.

My moods and emotions are much more intense during the week before my period.

I am easily frustrated.

I m pretty impatient and hate to wait.

I feel different from other girls.

I wish my parents understood how hard high school is for me.

I feel mentally exhausted when I get home from school.

It takes me longer to get assignments done compared to my classmates.

Even when I study hard I can t seem to remember things when I m taking an exam.

It s so hard for me to stay organized.

I only make good grades in the classes that really interest me.

I have trouble completing papers and projects on time.

The only way I can really study for a test is to stay up late the night before.

I sometimes eat to calm down.

It seems like I m always messing up.

I fidget or doodle in class because it s hard for me to sit still and listen.

I blurt things out without thinking.

Who do I go to to give me a diagnosis?
Answer :
Ok. Everything u mentioned in your list, I believe has happened to everyone at one point or another. Now I m not a girl. But here s what stuck out for me. (hope i m not treading on anything too sensitive here :) -

"I wish my parents understood how hard high school is for me."

"I only make good grades in the classes that really interest me."

-Now this 2nd one is DEFINATELY a very positive factor in a person s life. Focus on this, and eventually you will gain greater self-confidence and a more refined sense of direction & purpose. Try n pick up a hobby! Take care, all the best!
Question :

How do you tell your parents that you think you might have attention deficit disorder?

It was my english teacher that first suggested it to me. She thinks this because I haven t been able to complete any of my homework for her even when she gives me weeks of extra time to complete it. I thought it was just procrastination that was my problem because I often just think about what I m going to do to complete the assignments but don t follow through but then when I actually sit down and try to do the homework I just can t focus and finish them. Completing homework especially long assignments and big projects that have to do with writing has been a major problem for me since at least middle school. I m a senior in highschool now and am in danger of failing english. The thing is I understand the material and participate the most in the class and my teahcer has recognized this but most of the grades come from homework and essays. In addition to this I am very disorganized lose many important things all the time (esp my cellphone) and have tried desperately get and stay organized but fall into the same mess over and over again. I have done some research and these all seem to be symptoms of ADD but I don t know... I might just not be tring hard enough. My mom thinks I m too lazy and if I am and I tell my parents I think I have this problem and we go to counselors pay for medication and plan other methods for me to get help then I could just have wasted a lot of my parents time, money, and concern. I really have no idea what to do...
Answer :
Find some scholarly articles online (they will say "Peer-Reviewed if they are credible) that list the symptoms of ADD. Show these to your parents and say that you have been miserable and would like their help getting better.
