There is growing awareness about the problem of personality disorders. Surprisingly, psychologists estimate up to 15 percent of the population in Western society have some degree of personality disorder. In America, that would equate to over 40 million adults.

A personality is made up of several different components, including how the person interacts with their peers and the world around them, their beliefs, their emotional coping strategies, their thoughts and their pervasive mood. For someone with a disorder, there was a stage in their development where things did not progress as it should. There are several different types of personality disorder. Most people who suffer from one function fairly well as adults, but are often regarded as antisocial, eccentric or emotionally unpredictable by those around them.

One of the more common disorders is borderline personality disorder. Although the word 'borderline' suggests their behaviour is only marginally atypical, this is not the case. 'Borderline', at the time of the disorder first being identified, referred to the fact a person with it was believed to fall between having a neurosis or psychosis. A person with a borderline personality disorder has a tendency for extreme mood swings, and is prone to moments where they are confused about their self worth or sense of identity.

A much more extreme type of disorder is narcissistic personality disorder. To people around them, sufferers appear to have a very over inflated ego, but the disorder runs much deeper than that. They may have frequent fantasies about limitless power or money and continually boast or exaggerate their importance or talents. While they believe everyone around them should be in awe of their greatness they tend to view other people as been rather insignificant or stupid. Narcissists are difficult to treat. It is always a challenge to change a person's core beliefs, whether they are dysfunctional or not, and a narcissist may be very resistant to help as they perceive themselves as being so perfect.

Commonly question about Personality Disorders - A Discussion

Question :

What would be a good discussion question on personality disorders?

Okay, so for my social issues class we had to choose a topic that interested us that we would have to teach to the class. I chose personality disorders but i cant think of any discussion topics and that part is a big part of my grade. So any ideas?
Answer :
read a case study, have the people invision them selves as relatives and have them answer the question: what would they do if that was their brother or son?
Question :

Sleep/Eating and Antisocial Disorders For this discussion, select one of the following options: Option A:?

Sleep/Eating and Antisocial Disorders

For this discussion, select one of the following options:

Option A: People with antisocial personality disorder typically have no regard for right and wrong. They may often violate the law and the rights of others. They will lie, behave violently, and have abused drugs and alcohol. In your own words, describe the basic features of antisocial personality disorder. Explain why psychotherapy with this population is so likely to fail. Develop a short case (not covered in the course reading) of an individual with antisocial personality disorder to illustrate your point.

Option B: The prevalence of sleep and eating disorders has increased in recent years. Select one sleep or eating disorder to target for this discussion. In your own words, describe the precipitating factors, defining features, and treatment options. Develop a short case (not covered in the course reading) of an individual with your selected sleep or eating disorder to illustrate your point.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates posts. Respond substantively to at least two of your peers. What questions would you have for the patients in their cases? Are the treatments you would recommend for the individuals in their cases different from your peers recommendations? Why or why not?
Answer :
I would go with option A simply because I find it more interesting. I would use the example of someone such as a serial offender or murderer. They are always good at showing the classic signs of anti-social personality. The reason they do not do well with treatment, is because they lack empathy. They see no benefit to themselves in seeking or getting help and changing their behavior. To them doing anything for what they want makes the most sense. So it is really hard to try to rationalize with them, when they simply will not have the same rationale. Although it sort of does worry me, that you are posting this question which seems to be homework, and it talks about you treating the person. I hope you are not getting a higher level degree in this field. And having Yahoo Answers do your homework.

Question :

What approach to my essay is best?

I have an assignment to do for my clinical psychology module. It is only a 2000 word essy but there is a lot to cover. I have two essay plans in mind but do not know which one to go for?

The essay title is "Discuss the view that for the treatment of most mental disorders, psychological approaches are more effective than the use of medication".

Essay plan 1

Intro
Depression - what is depression, discussion of drug treatments, discussion of CBT, evaluation comparing CBT with drug treatments.
Schizophrenia - what is schizophrenia, discussion of drug treatments, discussion of a psychological intervention (haven t decided which one yet), evaluation comparing psychogical treatment with drug treatment.
Personality disorders - what are personality disorders, discussion of drug treatments, discussion of objective relations therapies
Conclusion

Although I like this plan I feel there will be too much to cover with a 2000 word limit.

TBC...
Answer :
i think plan#1 is better...it deals with the more common mental disorders...when writing ur essay it s best not to dwell too much on details...it will be helpful to limit technical terms...always ask yourself: "will someone not majoring in clinical psychology understand what i ve written?". and stick to the title s goal, that is, to prove or disprove that psychological approaches are more effective than medication when treating people with mental disorders. i hope i helped u in one way or another :-)
