Question :

Overcoming anxiety while driving?

I took Driver s Education last year and got my learner s permit in November. Prior to the lessons, I had never driven a vehicle. I was extremely nervous while driving, almost to the point where I felt like I needed to pull over on the side of the road and cry. My instructor passed me but I was told that I should drive through neighborhoods and roads that aren t busy so I would learn to feel more comfortable. I ve practiced a little bit since then, but not much since I m so terrified of driving.

Recently, I drove to my aunt s house. It s a 20 minute drive through the country, so I felt pretty good about it, especially since I had driven to her house once before. Everything was going perfect until I accidentally missed a stop sign. My mom was yelling at me as I went through it and I panicked; I couldn t even look anywhere but straight ahead. A truck was coming my way and I almost got hit, and I would have been hit if the driver hadn t slammed on his brakes... It was a really silly mistake and I understand that every beginner will make mistakes like that - even later on in life - but I m still really shaken up by it and I can t stop thinking about it. It brings me to tears; I m so ashamed of myself.

I m scared of driving because I m scared of not being able to predict what other drivers will do, I m scared of making mistakes like that again and I know that I ll panic again in similar situations. I was planning on getting a part time job, taking my little sister to school and running errands for my parents once I was able to get my provisional license later on this year, but now I never want to drive again.

My question is, how can I become more comfortable in the car and how can I stay calm?
Answer :
It can take time to get over something like that. On my way to book my first test to try and get my provisional, I stopped at lights that were turning red but the bus behind had every intention of going through! It was pretty scary and shook my nerve for a while. When I did get tested the following week, I started to do a 3-point turn by reversing! The tester was a great guy and very kindly failed me, stating as one of his reasons that I really didn t seem ready to drive solo and he was so right! (And I mean all that in total sincerity - he was the nicest, fairest tester I ever met or heard of.)

Are you driving a manual? My eldest started driving in a manual. The second started driving in an automatic. It was amazing how much easier my second child found it to drive. There are just so many things to think about with a manual that it makes it difficult to get the hang of driving.

Do as has been said and drive, drive, drive, in quiet places. You need to feel confident about handling the car before you start tackling traffic on any regular basis.

I remember my first ever driving lesson - we were driving down a quiet country road at the hair-raising speed of 10mph(!) with me screaming out, "Where s the brake, where s the brake?!?" And now I m quite confident and when I was in Sydney for the weekend with my then-fiance I drove out of Sydney airport in peak-hour traffic in this car that had absolutely pathetic visibility and I d never driven before and it didn t phase me in the slightest. (He wasn t particularly willing to tackle Sydney peak-hour traffic but then he s hardly ever driven in that kind of traffic and I *did* have the advantage over him of knowing where I was going.)
Question :

How can I overcome my fear and anxiety while driving?

I m 16 and I ve had my license for 2 months. I haven t driven anywhere by myself yet. I m calm most of the time, but that s probably because someone is always there to tell me if I m doing something wrong. But there are times when I get so upset that I start crying and want to hit something. My mom isn t helping me feel better at all. I want to be a safe driver. I think I m pretty good. But people hesitate before they tell me that I m a good driver. That s one of the reasons I get upset, because I don t think I did a turn correctly, stayed directly in my lane, or parked straight. I need advice to calm myself down and give me confidence so I can drive safely without wanting to do everything perfectly. I like to do things the way they re supposed to be done.
Answer :
well first you need to realize, your human, we all make mistakes. if i had anxiety while driving i think i would try and go out in little drives by myself. first around the neighborhood a few times. then go to the store, go on a few main roads. do that until you feel comfortable, then move to the expressway. get on at one exit, then get off at the very next. do this until you want to go on for a little longer. when you feel confident, you will realize that driving is not that hard of a thing. all you need to do is that everyone else on the road are idiots, and just be safe. but please don t go 5 under the speed limit, just keep up with traffic and you ll do great. while by yourself play some music quietly
Question :

How can I overcome my driving anxiety?

I live in Georgia and I am planning a roadtrip to Michigan in two months with a friend of mine. It s a 14 hour drive and we re suppose to take turns of course. But for as long as I have been driving, I have exprienced sudden anxiety attacks while driving. Sometimes I go for a while with out them, but other times I may have a few attacks at a time or a little more. Sometimes I get them more because I have other passengers in the car with me and mainly if I m driving the highway. I havent experienced any car accidents or seen any happen in front of my eyes. I have never driven on interstate I-75 ever because of the fear of have anxiety attacks. I thought about just practicing with someone with me to get a feel of the highway, but also thought it may be dangerous. Any advice for overcoming this problem.
Answer :
If you pose a threat to the lives of other drivers and your own, you shouldn t be driving at all
