Question :

Working with people with Mental Health Problems who are in recovery from drugs and alcohol. This is my new job?

I ve been asked to come up with ideas for group sessions such as -
Fitness (I m a qualified Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer)

Music (I m an avid musician)

Art Night

I need ideas what to with them and get them involved.
All are on medication so it s hard to motivate alot of the time but they do have to participate to be able to stay at the hostel.
At the moment there is a pond project. a recent barbecue build has just been finished. They have darts night and a cooking night.
I need as many ideas a s possible.
Alot of them can t leave the hostel by themselves or leave at all.

This is a new career and job for me and I myself have been through depression and addiction. I really really want to help. I became a Gym Instructor as it helps with my depression and that why I am doing this.
any ideas appreciated.
Answer :
As they will be doing it ask them what they want to do and pick the most popular one.

Or you could pick a few subjects like those listed and ask them to vote and then built it around what they want. After all if someone is not interested in a subject it hard to muster motivation where as if the person want s something they will get involved.

As it s a hostel what is the decor like? Is it in need of a revamp? If so what about somethink like decorating a communal room which will not only get them involved but benefit everyone that stays there.
Question :

Need some answers from someone thats on SSI Disability for Mental Illness?

I have a friend who is in def. need of getting on Social Security Disability. She s been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and Borderline Personality Disorder, and takes Ritalin 3 times a day and Seroquel once.

So this is my question: Whats steps does she need to take to ensure her application is approved?

She can get a job, but usually ends up losing it due to her "mental health", she s also in recovery from drugs; more specifically crack cocaine.

She s been this way for as many years as I can remember, I ve helped her out for many years but its time she get on some kind of assistance. She refuses to apply at this time and not sure why. Could be because shes afraid of the denial, or could be shes embarrassed about her illness, not too many people know aside from me.

This website may help answer some of your questions.

As far as what kind of paperwork she will need to supply - that will be every single sheet of paper and/or report that every doctor who has looked at her can supply.
You can get copies from the physicians office. Usually you can get the first set of copies free but then have to pay a fee per page if you want additional copies.
Usually $1.00 per page so it s cheaper to just take the original to the library or the a major grocery store (15 cents) and make the copies yourself if you don t have a copier/scanner at home.

Put all the medical reports and any prescription receipts in a binder in chronological order for easy access.

For more help and information contact your nearest organization for the deaf and/or physically impaired.
I don t know where you live but this page might help you in your search for social help.

It s good of you to help your friend and if everyone had your conscience then maybe the world wouldn t be so hard.

Good luck.
Question :

In recovery from Substances but not from family abuse?

I m in recovery from substance abuse and in my forties. I ve had to move back in with my parents after my divorce. Here I m constantly harassed, abused and tormented by my elder brother. He has clearly got it in for me as I recently discovered that he will go to extremes and tried to get me sectioned. My psychiatrist confirms that I do not have any thing to worry about. Police have been called calm arguments which have erupted but I m been the victim. I later discovered that this was part of his plan to get me sectioned.
I ve just been granted funding for residential treatment for my addiction but concerned that if I go I will not have anything to come back to as I fear that my belongings will get thrown out.
My parents are in their mid seventies and he is their star, everything he says is gospel. I clearly don t want to be living here as it s effecting my mental health (I suffer from Clinical Depression) and effecting my recovery from drugs and alcohol.
What can I legally do to stop any attempts to remove my belongings and to stop him harassing me? Can I get some sort of court order? What legal standing do I have?
I m concerned for my parents too as he is making their late years difficult when they should be comfortable. I m aware that my presence doesn t help.
Answer :
Go see a lawyer about your belongings and your parents in regards to the fears you have about your brother you could also see a social worker about your worries for your parents and brother they will be able to keep an eye on your brother and visit your parent regularly to make sure he is not doing any thing that may be detrimental to your parents health or well being and finances. Professional advise is all ways the best rout to take in these situations .Good luck my friend.
