What is the most deadly psychological disorder today? If you guessed an eating disorder, then you are right. According to WebMD, eating disorders are illnesses that cause a person to adopt harmful eating habits. So, does this make WebMD just a great resource, or is this really true, and is an eating disorder really a dangerous illness? Most sufferers of an eating disorder are often mocked about their problem, and they are not taken seriously. People should not misinterpret or disbelieve sufferers of an eating disorder because it is, in fact, a very serious illness. There are, however, minor cases of eating disorders but there are far too many deaths related to them, thus we must take this issue very seriously and approach it with care.

Why are eating disorders the greatest killers among the many different psychological disorders? This is because of the media, as well as the disorder's dramatic and deadly affects on the body. Today, media is in our lives no matter where we go. From television, radio, and the news, to magazines, newspapers, and the internet, media plays a big role in the spreading ideas, norms, and styles to people. Media spreads information really quickly to millions of people. Media is around people no matter where they turn, and they face it on a daily basis in some form. So, how is media related to eating disorders? This question, and many other questions, will be answered after we get a better understanding of what an eating disorder is, its characteristics, statistics, and ways to prevent and treat it. I will, however, focus only on anorexia and bulimia because they are more affected by the media than overeating disorders are.

People with eating disorders obsess about their intake of food, and they spend a lot of time thinking about their weight and body image. Their body is badly affected both emotionally and physically. People with an eating disorder may suffer from a number of different symptoms, and not everyone gets the same symptoms as they vary from individual to individual. According to the Help Guide-Mental Health Issues, even though anorexia is the most revealed eating disorder in the media, bulimia is the most prevalent eating disorder.

A person suffering from anorexia sees themselves as fat when they are, in fact, skinny and underweight. Their weight does not match their height, activity level or age. They get bad memory, feel depressed, have a fear of gaining weight, feel light headed, and often faint. Women with anorexia may have problems with their menstrual cycle such as missed or late periods, as well as trouble getting pregnant. Woman who are pregnant have a higher risk of a miscarriage and a higher risk to need to deliver their baby through C-section. People suffering from anorexia can also have muscle and joint problems, kidney stones, kidney failure, anemia, bloating, constipation, low levels of potassium, magnesium, and sodium in their bodies, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, and heart failure. Some physical signs that can be seen on a person suffering from anorexia are dry or yellow skin, brittle nails, more hair growth on their body, and thin and brittle hair. A person with anorexia may also get cold easily, bruise easily, and feel down a lot.

A person suffering from bulimia can get the same effects as a person suffering from anorexia since both disorders involve the loss of major and rapid weight, which leads to very unhealthy changes in the body. Symptoms between anorexia and bulimia sufferers differ in the way that sufferers of bulimia would eat a lot of food in a short amount of time and then force themselves to throw up, when people with anorexia just don't want to eat altogether. People with bulimia also misuse laxatives and go on strict diets of fasting and rigorous exercising. Sufferers from eating disorders in general are affected emotionally, psychologically, behaviorally, and socially. Emotional and psychological changes include increased anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, guilt, and low self esteem. Some changes in behavior of a person suffering from an eating disorder include dieting, frequent visits to the bathroom after eating, a change in fashion, and constantly checking their weight. Some social changes of a person suffering from an eating disorder may include isolation, being anti-social, avoiding social gatherings where food is involved, and a loss of interest for hobbies. Other physical signs of eating disorders in general include edema, a reduction in metabolism, sore throats, stomach problems, heartburn, and hypoglycemia; which leads to irrational thinking, shaking, confusion, irritability, and comas.

Commonly question about The Effects of Media on the Skinny Side of Eating Disorders

Question :

I need to lose weight and still eat how do i do that?

I have gained over 150lbs on my medications since 1996 and my body is not happy. I want to lose weight and i have been excersizing everyday. Walking a lot mostly and running around after my 2yr old. And in the summer i would swim and walk @ least an hour a day. What ever makes my heart beat fast. Because that is what my dr said to do.
I have been starving myself. All the media states that the only reason people are overweight is because of them over eating.
I have never over eaten in my life. My weightgain is from side effects of medications. That i have to be on for the rest of my life due to an illness. And before i got sick, i was so skinny. I want to be that way again!
Anyway i was wanting to try eating 5 small meals a day and see if i can lose the weight.
What are good things to eat and how do i space them throughout the day? (like what time to eat and what foods are good at that time).
Thank you for reading.
God bless!
Answer :
I feel your pain! I had meds do this to me. I am at 180, and have lost 60 pounds in 3 months like this. And by the way, thank you for deciding the EAT while dieting! (:

Great foods to eat are fruits and veggies, serving sizes of cheeses ( I prefer low fat cottage cheese ), grilled fish and pork ( baked can gather the grease in the meat ) canned tuna, and baked chips.

I d stay away from diet foods, they do more harm with their sugar than good. (: Also, try to stay away from red meats too.

Start breakfast at about 7:30, and pace your meals up until 8 pm. It s best not to eat after that, a it slows your metabolism.

Try to do a work out before your first meal ( just a quick walk with your little one would do ) and a heavier one after. though I m sure being a mommy is plenty a work out. This gets the metabolism rolling better anyhow.

I wish you luck on your journey!
Question :

Need advice about low testosterone levels?

alright long story with a short question..
im just trying to stop all of the follow up questions in advance.

back in 2005 i was working in louisiana after huricane katrina. i work for the govnmnt but do not have insurance, its kinda like a contract job. but whenever i am at large operations like that i always have the benefit of having a doctor on site for free treatment. ..soo...

by the way I am 34 now, and was 29 almost 30 then.

after i was there for a few months i was really tired and run down. and extremely grumpy. almost hostile at imes. very unlike me. i thought it was a stress issue due to the long hours and a few other things. i didnt really notice i had no sex drive because i was away from home and my significant other. but either way i hadnt woke up with a Mr. happy in weeks, maybe months. my sex drive at home was pretty much nonexistant also before i left. i was looking for excuses to get out of my manly duties.
mostly the problem was that i was feeling very short tempered with people i had to work with at this point. so i went to the doctor and told her the symptoms, she asked me some questions. "sex drive stuff i hadnt thought of" and said i was expereincing low testosterone. i was also getting pretty out of shape. my arms were getting skinny. my gut was getting flabby. but i noticed it mostly in my usually very well developed legs. they were starting to look like female legs. no hair. hardly any muscle tone. and i was getting fat deposits on them. i thought it was because of long hours, and no exersize. but the effects were too dramatic.
anyway.. its pretty clear my testosterone levels were low. she told me she could do a blood test to determine whether i should use injections or gel or patch. and i asked her some questions. mostly about side effects.. we have all heard the horrible things about steroids in the media.. shrinking balls, baldness, cancer! she said i would probably need testosterone therapy of some sort for the rest of my life. i was mortified.. i had been the picture of health my whole life.. very active, ate right. low blood pressure. reasonable body fat to muscle ratio. didnt smoke, drank in moderation.
this type of thing only happened to people who didnt take care of themselves right?
i told her i needed to think about some things and look into some different options.

so i went back to my office and started looking at different treatments online. different symptoms.
natural treatments. i ran accross hundreds of "natural" remedies. herbs.. root extracts.. vitamin combinations. im sure if you are reading this you have ran accross several yourself.
so a few things led me to my decision to try some natural remedies. firstly the doctor told me it was possible that my test levels were low because of the long stressfull hours and lack of sex..
so maybe just a few little things here and there could help out right..
well first i tried some stuff i ordered off the internet. it was a liquid drop you held under your tongue. tesocurlone i think it was called. i also increased my b complex vitamins.
well that did it.. after about 3 or 4 days i woke up with a raging rock hard erection. i thought - hell i should be a doctor.. i felt better. my muscles felt stronger.
the affects however were shortlived. after about 3 months of this, i started to see a decline in my sex drive and energy. also since i work out semi regularly i could tell my performance was fading. weaker, and less stamina ..
so on to another remedy... then another... then another...
the results over the past few years have almost always been the same. i have tried different combinations of herbs... nettle root, vitamins and over the counter remedies from health food stores.
they seem to help for a while until my body kind of "runs out" its almost like its sputtering. up and down.
so now im about to change jobs and have insurance in april. to celebrate i went to 2 different doctors here in town to try to maybe get my testosterone levels regular and steady. i have decided that everyone grows old but at 34 i want to be able to enjoy the time i have and its very hard to do physical activities like riding mountain bikes and playing basketball when you feel like you are 64 instead of 34. i dont care about performance enhancing, only enjoying life.
so the first doctor i went to i told him all these things. he asked me about my job and personal relationships. asked me how much i worked out. which is always 2 hours of full court basketball on sunday and light weight training once or twice during the week during winter. but summertime im always outside, riding, hiking, building things, whatever i can do to enjoy the outdoors.
he took my vitals and tested my blood, but for cholesteral and lipids and stuff rather than test.
he said i thought i was depressed. he rattled off a couple antidepressants he thought i could have some success with. he said steroids were basically the devil. they would kill me if i too
Answer :
Low Test, First of all let me tell you I have been taking testosterone injections and using Andro Gel for over 12 years and the Endocrinologist who prescribed Test for me told me I would have to use it the rest of my life and I fully intend on doing just that. Contrary to what you hear or read on the internet or from people who know nothing about testosterone replacement therapy, TRT - there are "absolutely no adverse side effects" from taking TRT. None! The testosterone in the injections is exactly the same as what your body makes naturally and all you are doing is replacing what your body is not producing. However having said that, there is one side affect if you plan on having children because it will lower your sperm count and you ll become virtually infertile. So if you want children have them first before taking Test. This infertility can be reversed if you stop taking Test but it will take awhile for your body to recuperate, at least 8 weeks or more, probably more like a couple months. The only way to find out for sure if your Test is low or why it is low is to have a blood test measuring several factors that could cause low test, e.g. your LH & FSH hormones, prolactin, the aromatase enzyme, & your testicles production. My diagnosis was "idiopathic hypogonadism" which means the reason is unknown why my testicles were not functioning normally. Ironically my doctor is in WV but might not be close to you since he is in Petersburg and also in Mt Storm. He s at the VA clinic in Petersburg and his private practice in Mt Storm, Dr. Alan Kunkel but my advice would be go see an Endocrinologist or a Urologist, not some general practitioner. There are also Hormone Replacement Therapy Clinics in some of your larger cities that specialize in this. If you need any more information you can contact me @ fototag@rocketmail.com I m very familiar with TRT and also the use of steroids having used both in the past 20 yrs.
P.S. If you go to the following site they have a section on HRT where you can read about personal experiences from guys who are using Test & HGH.Hormone Replacement Therapy, Longevity, Wellness, Anti-Aging, Alternative Medicine < http://forums.steroid.com/ >
Question :

Aunts going crazy after LapBand and is trying to make me, a 17 y/o get it!?

hi I live with my aunt who just recently got the lapband surgery about five months ago. she s lost about 60 lbs already and hardly eats anything. she has became a nut ever since! I m usually a calm person and don t let people get to me but she s driving me nuts! she looks ill from the weight loss almost like she is suffering from anorexia! she s sleeps alot, is Aleah grumpy, picks fights with me an calls me names, she s even gotten violent with me! another thing that s been p***ing me off is that she constantly reminds everyone of her weight loss "can ya tell?", "omg I haven t ate anything", "do I look skinnier?, "I m in a size medium now it hardly fits" IS ALL I HEAR! it s seriously turning her into an idiot. she sits at the table and puts on this dramatic show when she eats a couple bites and then starts to burp loudly and run for the toilet (I know this happens to lapband people alot but she makes it worse then it really is!) I know this because another woman in my family got it and isnt half as bad as my aunt! one minutes she s complaining about not eating and feeling too skinny and the next she s bragging and showing off her collarbone! she also gets very offended when people put her in her place and remind her that she got a surgery so she dint loose weight on her own. people say this alot to her because shes always bragging and putting her two sense in about their weight! she s even recommended that I get it!!! I m only 17 and she s trying to convince me get it when I turn 18 in a couple months?! what mother figure tells their daughter to turn to surgery as soon as they turn 18?! I m no Kim Kardashian, I have curves but I am no where obese! she even went as far as to looking up conditions I have that could let me get approved for the surgery regardless of my weight (cause I m not that overweight, a condition like depression could get me approved after I gain a little more) Is there anyway I can get her to get off my back about this surgery?! I m still young and want to loose weight the old fashioned way NO SHORT CUTS! And do you think she s having a bad side effect of the Lapband making her crazy all of the sudden?
Answer :
Hi Rachel,
I think I ve read this kind of story over and over again.

And for 32,563 times: obesity has it s own standard.
I don t know what s your BMI and your aunt might have some mental problem after the surgery.
I think both of you need to see a doctor to consul if you really need a surgery like she always told or to fix her problem.
