Is it good health policy to give mental illness parity with physical illness?
It is very good policy.
Why are many mental health professionals like case managers & psych nurses so UNeducated about mental illness?
I mean, like-why do they turn your physical problems into psychiatric problems?Earlier today, I visited my case manager for our monthly follow-up appointment (it s the clinic policy for everyone to have a case manager). & she asked me what was wrong with me & told me that I looked like I was in distress. So I told her about my shoulders feeling funny (not actually hurting), & she thought I was having a panic attack. I was like, "No. I m fine. I m OK." I know she asked out of care & concern & everything, but I m just wondering why mental health professionals (in general) are so misinformed if they went to college to study about people with mental illnesses. & I ve also had mental health professionals mistake my anxiety for paranoia & my physical pains for hypochondria, when "in fact" I have irritable bowel syndrome.
They do this because there are a lot of mentally ill patients who instead of dealing with their mental issues properly they "turn them into" physical issues. It isn t everyone and I am hoping that you made it clear to your social worker that in your case that was not the situation. Another problem is that social workers are overworked and they have too many case loads. Sometimes they loose their lack of "kindness" and "caring" and start to behave and think like "robots". When situations like this happen you need to make sure that your social worker knows that she is wrong. It proves that you are taking good care of yourself and are taking good "mental" care of yourself.

Where can I find affordable health insurance for my son who has a mental illness.?
my son has a mental illness and maxed out of my husbands policy due to his age. He works 15 hrs. a week and his employer doesn t offer insurance for part time employees. We ve checked numerous policies on line and the cheapest we ve found for him is $800 a month, way more than we can afford. Because he still lives at home, our income is considered as far as government paid plans. We need to find a policy for him but I m at a dead end. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.I m in the same position your son is in. I just got fired from my job due to my mental illness and I quit my other one due to this stuff. The only thing I can do is tell you what I plan on doing. I m talking to my county about getting state health insurance. I m also talking to my hospitals compassionate care program to get my meds for a reduced price from the drug companies. So I suggest you talk to a county social worker and see what they can do for you.
To the answerer that said that health insurance sucks in the u.s. is right. When I was on insurance through my company my policy only paid for my meds and they didn t cover my psychiatrist visits or anything. So this country is in definite need of revamping its mental health system.
